But here is a real quick overview just to get us started. In the USA there are several models on the road. However the most common trucks currently on the road were manufactured between 2005 and 2016.

Of the various trucks found on the road today, there are 5 models that seem to be the most popular, in the states anyway.

In the order of popularity they are:

  1. International
  2. Freightliner
  3. Kenworth
  4. Volvo
  5. Peterbilt

Though Peterbilt only accounts for a small percentage of the commercial trucks on the road they have seen a spike in their popularity. They seem to hold their overall value, but also can be a bit more costly when you visit Peterbilt dealers.

Peterbilt Motors Company is currently headquartered in Denton, Texas. It also has a manufacturing facility there, and in Sainte-Thérèse, (Quebec, Canada).

They got their start in Oakland California back in 1939 and have seen many changes since that time.

Originally the Peterbilt was designed for the logging industry. They needed a vehicle capable of handling the rough terrain of the mountains. After all they needed something better than mules and steam powered vehicles.

The Great depression had created an environment where they were able to purchase the facilities needed to manufacture their own vehicles.

But, it was slow to get public interest, as was the case with many industries in that time; During WWII they were able to help support the war effort and in 1944 (after the death of their founder) they were able to expand operations even further.

Though many changes were to come in the corporation chiefly in 1958, 1960, and 1971, they were able to continue to expand and grow.

Even today they continue to build innovative medium duty trucks and heavy duty trucks.
