Hey! I'm George J.Magoci and I will send you a FREE eBook where you can learn 12 secret steps how to make $950 more truck/month.
All of us that live in trucking world are aware what kind of crucial data those gauges display and show to us but did ever some of you wanted to go deeper and find out how everything started, where it is now and where the future of trucks and truck gauges is? Over the next lines I would like to share with all of you my research how the situation will evolve.
The US tracking history is pretty interesting. As for the truck gauges, everything started pretty much at the same time as trucking industry started developing and producing trucks. It expanded quickly in the 1920’s when the trucking industries become more and more strong and when the number of produced trucks increased dramatically. So it would be correct to say that the industry of truck gauges followed the industry and development of the entire trucking industry and entire eco-system.
As the time passed truck gauges started to become more and more sophisticated and capable to collect and display all kind of different data. At the very first phase the only data you were able to see was speed; but later on, one by one, more information become available.
With this improvement of truck gauges it becomes easier to drive trucks and have a complete control over them. Benefits were huge and allowed drivers to be less mechanics and to focus only on driving; witch improved the overall picture of traffic safety recording to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA.
It allowed also trips to become more and longer and more and more efficient because truck down time due to often stops to check the status of the truck exhaust, the engine, Webasto, air brakes and all the other systems was reduced to minimum. Of course the progress here explained didn’t happen overnight, it took around 50 years to achieve that stage of the truck gauges.
We would be definitely right if we say that a lot of truck drivers over history had a rough time driving trucks and the initiative for this improvement came from them as simply there was a huge need for this.
But today truck gauges are pretty much standard part of any truck cabin interior and I especially mean on Class A trucks where all of them have a lot of different truck gauges. I can’t even think that there could be a truck on today’s market without truck gauges but if I’m wrong feel free to correct me in the bottom comments. Maybe that could be the case in some special purpose custom trucks designed for rough environment were durability is top priority and truck gauges are left out.
So as a standard truck gauges, trucking industry considers truck gauges that come as standard equipment installed in the cockpit of the new purchased truck. Those truck gauges are designed to display all the crucial information necessary for today’s modern truck driver and depending of the truck make and model we could definitely find all kind of different models.
Some of them display only basic info and some of them posses quite advanced information and in this field thought are divided on to truck drivers that like when the cockpit is packed with a lot of gauges and on the other hand you can find drivers that like simple and clean cockpit with little or less truck gauges.
I leave to you guys to decide which cockpit suits you better but I will just mention what would be the standard truck gauges that come with most of the trucks today:
As some of you probably noticed the list could also be a lot bigger and there must have been some things left out but to be honest the industry is making giant steps and advancing year over year in adding standard equipment and whatever, so the list we create now will definitely be out dated over the next few years.
This is just a basic approach to get idea what are the truck gauges included in today’s cockpit and what are the information driver is receiving in real time while driving his class 8 beast on the high ways across our great country.
Additional truck gauges are part of the aftermarket products and represent the gauges that are not part of standard cockpit equipment of today’s modern trucks.
